5 Things I’d Tell My Younger Self

I love spending time with my family, telling stories and reminiscing about old times. This weekend really got me thinking about my childhood and if I could tell my younger self five things what would they be, so here goes …

  1. FROG :: Fully Rely OGod in all things. That, “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength,” Philippians 4:13. Having faith in the Lord just makes life easier. Knowing that I can rely on God in all things brings so much comfort, peace and joy to life.
  2. Don’t be scared :: As a child I was, and still am a shy person. I never went away to sleep away camps or went on extended visits without my parents to visit family or friends. I was too shy, timid and scared. If I could tell my younger self one thing this would be to get out there and live life and these experiences. When you grow up, you won’t regret any of these experiences, in fact, you’ll have so many memories and stories to tell.
  3. Have a hobby :: Hobbies don’t have define who we are but they teach us so many valuable life lessons. How to think outside the box, take criticism, challenge ourselves, work with others and so on. Hobbies give us a creative outlet and a way to meet like minded friends.
  4. Play a sport :: Similar to a hobby, a sport builds character and encourages life experiences. Playing a sport teaches you how to win, lose, how to work hard, work with others, good healthy lifestyle habits and more. I would tell my younger self to not be afraid (see #1) and get out there and try something. You can’t fail for trying.
  5. Eat more veggies :: They won’t kill you and there’s a pretty good chance you’ll like something more than corn on the cob. I’d tell myself that eating more veggies will promote a healthier lifestyle and set the stage for years to come of healthy eating habits.

I’m sure my parents told me these things at one point or another in my life, but I wasn’t ready to hear them. Now in my thirties, here I sit writing a list of things I wish I had told myself and if I’m honest with myself a few of the things on this list I’m still not doing (namely 4 & 5). I can’t complain about the choices that I made in my younger years, because after all they’ve shaped the person that I am today. It’s always good to reflect on choices and decisions that I’ve made, and to look ahead and see how I can better myself for tomorrow.

Are there a few things you’d like to tell your younger self? Do you want to share them?
